RFID and Inventory Tracking
RFID tracking (Radio Frequency ID) is a technological revolution in the supply chain management that allows tracking and tracing of products from manufacturing to end-consumers. Through RFID, a company or an individual can track inventory, samples and any valuable and sensitive items.
The RFID tracking technology offers the ability to tag a sample or other item with comprehensive information regarding its nature, handling instructions, processing history, etc. Using a radio device and a transponder, RFID tracking technology is flexible. The transponder that will be affixed to the tracked item can be as small as a chip in a vial a label or a plastic card.
When brought into proximity to one another, the Radio Frequency device provides enough power for the transponder to transmit the information it contains. The devices are able to transmit over a convenient range, and, because there's no physical reading of barcodes involved, it's far less likely that any labels will be damaged or compromised during the handling process.
The RFID tracking devices can also be affixed to refrigerators, cabinets and other storage units. As inventory is added, the transponder's information can be easily updated. This makes tracking inventory incredibly easy. Knowing what is in each storage device in a warehouse, laboratory or other setting can help streamline the entire facility. The need to search through storage containers looking for items is virtually eliminated.
RFID tracking tags work with a variety of devices. Handheld devices specific to the task of reading RFID transponders are available. PDA's, laptops and desktop computers can also be modified to perform the required scanning. The integration of RFID technology with such devices allows information to be instantly updated in the associated database as soon as the tag is scanned. Because there is no need to enter the same information on multiple occasions, the opportunities for error are greatly reduced. In industries such as medical and research laboratories, this is far more than a convenience.
A software, that automates the tasks associated with RFID tracking, is also available.
A sample can be easily tracked and its status updated through the processes of collection, preparation and analysis so that anyone involved in the processing of that sample can easily ascertain its current status, what processes it has already been put through and what processes and analysis are yet required.
RFID technology adds an entirely new dimension of convenience and accuracy to any inventory process.
